10 Ways to Include Color in Your Kitchen or Bathroom Design

This year sees an explosion of colors used in interior design. The clean, white look has been overtaken by black with warm, vibrant colors such as pink, orange, blue and green. Go for a daring pop of color, an entirely monotone color scheme, or inject the warmth of popular wood and metal tones. It’s all about making the heart of the home inviting with a stylish kitchen design color scheme and ensuring bath design retreats are cozy.  Besides accessorizing with towels and rugs, there are many ways to include color in your kitchen and bath design. Read on for our top 10 tips.

1. Countertops

Engineered quartz is more affordable and durable than natural stone and it comes in a limitless selection of colors to liven up any workspace or vanity. Colorful terrazzo is also on the rise for an injection of retro vibrancy. Or add the warmth of wood tones with a wood countertop, which beautifully accents this year’s blue tones like this Yardley kitchen design.

2. Floors

Don’t be boring when choosing flooring. Why not go for tiles in a rich shade of royal blue or burnt orange with dark grouting? Terrazzo floor tiles are especially gorgeous surrounded by a border of dark, glossy wood. Cement floors are wonderfully durable, stylish and available in whichever shade you choose.

3. Ceilings

The sky’s the limit when it comes to the 5th wall. Try rich wood paneling or just paint your favorite color on your ceiling to transform your room in a quirky and cool way.

4. Appliances

Stainless steel appliances are on the decline as manufacturers embrace the color trend. Last year’s pastel appliances have now given way to primary colors, which cheer up any kitchen design. Fridges, stoves and even hoods can become the focal point of your kitchen design. We saw plenty of this at the 2020 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show last month, like these amazing, bright appliances.

5. Open Shelving

The current trend of replacing upper kitchen cabinets with open shelving provides an opportunity to inject color into a kitchen or bathroom design. You can show off a painted, tiled of wallpapered wall, have colored shelves or dictate any color scheme you like with displayed items. Keep collectibles on top and everyday items on lower shelves but coordinate the colors for a really effective look.  Maintain a moody color scheme with cool, metal shelving or warm up your design with wood shelves.

6.Sinks

A sink is a subtle way of introducing a pop of color. Gold sinks in rose, black and yellow shades with smooth, brushed or hammered finishes shine bright alongside natural materials. Gold faucets and hardware also invigorate white surroundings and start you on the road to warmer tones. Or go for an industrial style with rustic metal tones like this bathroom design in Wycombe, PA.

7. Furniture

Incorporate colorful furniture into your design. You could have a vibrantly colored island or try upholstered bar stools in this year’s royal blue. Why not get a green vanity cabinet or invest in a deep pink ottoman to relax on after a bath? Paint your dining chairs or go for burnt orange slip covers for instant change. Just one brightly colored piece can take your interior design to the next level.

8. Lighting

Lighting helps to differentiate areas and create a warm atmosphere. A warm bulb or colored light transforms the area around it. Lampshades also make an impact. An oversized drum or dramatic pendant in primary or jeweled tones makes a statement and embraces the color trend. If bright colors are not your style, go for a distinctive metal tone with stylish pendants or sconces.

9. Shower Doors

If you want to go for something really unique, shower doors in colored glass are coming into the spotlight. Stained glass styles are becoming available too, giving an art deco feel to your shower time. If you aren’t sure about coloring your glass, try a colored grid for an upbeat industrial look.   Or, stick to a sleek, frameless glass enclosure and add color with the tile design in your shower.

10. Monochromatic

Black is huge right now and is popular as a monochrome color scheme. Black surroundings might not be the look you’d like, but black can be used as a background to pops of color. Why not add an accent in an on-trend color like deep blue, green, pink or orange or gold finish accessories to your monochrome color scheme? Where light colors enlarge a space, darker colors make it feel cozier.
