A laundry room remodel looks like one room, and it isn’t. It’s four separate systems that have to land in the same eight or nine feet of wall: a drain and a water supply, a dryer exhaust duct that has to reach outside air, a dedicated circuit or a gas line, and a floor stiff enough to hold a washer through a spin cycle.

Where you decide to put the room determines how many of those four you’re building from scratch. That is the first decision, and it comes long before cabinet doors.

Get that order backwards and the cost shows up later as change orders. A laundry moved into a second-floor hall closet can mean a drain line chased through a finished ceiling, a new 240-volt run from a panel with no spare slots, and a vent path that still has to leave the house somewhere. None of that appears on a cabinet quote, and all of it is real money.

What Does a Laundry Room Remodel Actually Involve?

Four things, roughly in this order: drain and water supply, dryer exhaust, power or gas, and the floor structure under the machines. Cabinets, counters and finishes come afterward. If those four service runs already exist where you want the room, the project is mostly carpentry. If they don’t, it is construction.

The washer needs hot and cold supply lines and a drain it can pump into, usually a standpipe tied into the home’s waste and vent system. That is not the same thing as a floor drain or a sink trap, though plenty of older basements improvise with both. The dryer needs a duct with a clear path outdoors and a termination that opens when the dryer runs.

Electric dryers need a dedicated 240-volt circuit; gas dryers need a gas line plus an ordinary outlet. And the washer itself puts real, uneven load into the floor every time the drum spins up.

  • Drain and supply. A standpipe at the right height with a proper trap, plus hot and cold valves, ideally in a recessed outlet box so the machine sits flat against the wall.
  • Dryer exhaust. Rigid metal duct on the shortest practical route, with a damper at the outside wall or roof.
  • Power or gas. A dedicated 240-volt circuit for an electric dryer, or a gas line plus a standard outlet for a gas dryer.
  • Floor and structure. Framing that resists deflection, and in most relocations a pan under the washer with its own drain.

All four already exist in a basement or garage laundry, which is why so many houses put the machines there. Move the room and you are choosing how many to rebuild somewhere else.

Can You Move the Laundry Room Upstairs?

Usually yes, and it is the most common relocation homeowners ask about. The limits are practical, not legal. A drain has to reach a waste stack with enough fall, the dryer needs a duct route to an exterior wall or roof, and the floor has to be stiff enough that a spin cycle stays in the laundry room.

The easy version of this is a laundry stacked directly above or beside existing bathroom plumbing. The waste stack already runs through that bay, the supply lines are already on that floor, and the plumber is extending short branches instead of opening a chase all the way down from the basement. The hard version is a laundry mid-hallway, with no wet wall nearby and no exterior wall within reach.

Two things are worth building in whenever the laundry leaves the ground floor. First, a drain pan under the washer with its own drain line, so a failed supply hose becomes a nuisance instead of a ceiling repair. Second, quarter-turn shutoffs at the supply box, because valves that are easy to reach actually get used.

Noise is the part people underestimate. A high-speed spin on a bouncy floor transmits straight through the framing into the rooms around it. Solid blocking between the joists, a stiffer underlayment and machines set dead level solve most of it. Doing any of that afterward means pulling up the finished floor you just paid for.

Why Does the Dryer Vent Decide So Much?

Because the duct has a hard length limit and it has to end outside the building. The residential code caps a clothes dryer exhaust duct at 35 feet of developed length, and every 90-degree bend subtracts another five feet from it. Put the laundry deep inside the house and you can run out of duct before reaching a wall.

The code language is specific about it. As quoted by the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors, the maximum developed length of a clothes dryer exhaust duct shall not exceed 35 feet from the dryer location to the wall or roof termination, and that allowance drops by 2.5 feet for each 45-degree bend and 5 feet for each 90-degree bend.

Developed length means every straight run and every elbow added together, so a route with four right-angle turns has already spent 20 of its 35 feet.

That is a design constraint, not an installer problem to solve later. It is the reason a laundry that looks perfect on a floor plan sometimes has to shift one room over, and the reason a dryer occasionally ends up venting through the roof rather than a sidewall.

Length is not the only argument for keeping the run short and rigid. Long, flexible, ribbed duct catches lint, and lint is the thing that burns. The U.S. Fire Administration reports that failure to clean was the leading factor contributing to the ignition of clothes dryer fires in homes from 2018 to 2020.

A short, smooth metal duct somebody can actually reach and clean is the cheapest fire prevention in the room, and it gets decided while the walls are open.

What Changes If the Laundry Shares a Wall With a Kitchen or Bath?

Sharing a wet wall is the cheapest move on the board. The drain, the vent stack and the hot and cold supply already run through that framing, so the plumber is extending short branches instead of cutting new lines through finished space. You still owe the dryer duct and the electrical, but the two most expensive unknowns are gone.

That is why a laundry so often lands next to a mudroom off the garage, in a closet backing onto a powder room, or in a second-floor hall that shares framing with a bathroom. It is also why the answer changes house by house. A colonial with a stack running front to back gives you a different set of options than a ranch with everything spread across one floor plate.

How to Settle the Location Before the Budget Is Set

Do I need a drain pan under a second-floor washer?

Requirements vary by township, so treat the pan as standard practice rather than an optional upgrade. A pan with its own drain line turns a burst supply hose into water on the floor instead of water in the ceiling below. It costs very little during construction and is close to impossible to add once the room is finished.

Can a stacked washer and dryer fit in a closet?

Often yes, and it is a good answer for a hallway or a bedroom floor. What you can’t skip is clearance. A stacked pair still needs the dryer duct behind it, service access in front, and a doorway wide enough to pull the machines out when something fails. Louvered doors help with the heat and moisture a closed closet traps.

Is a gas or an electric dryer better when the laundry moves?

It depends on what is already near the new location. An electric dryer needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit, which means a run from the panel and occasionally a panel upgrade. A gas dryer needs a gas line extended to the room plus an ordinary outlet. If gas is already in that wall, the gas install is usually cheaper. If it isn’t, electric often wins on cost.

How long does a laundry room remodel take?

Scope drives it far more than square footage. A room that keeps every service run where it already is can move quickly.
